Newsletter #1 – January, 2003

Just North of Comayagua, Honduras is a very poor mountain village with a small two-room school. There are probably hundreds of these villages in Honduras, but we have chosen this one to help right now. Last year a Rotary Club gave enough money to complete a water project to the school, which in turn supplied the water for the village. While I was there in December, I had the opportunity to attend graduation at the school. This little school had ninety-two students. The students in Honduras can attend school basically free, except for uniforms and such. An education completed upon graduation from the sixth grade. If they want any further education they must travel to a different school. This would cost money that these students do not have.

At the graduation, three students completed their education. After many questions, I discovered that these students could, and would like to further education by attending a trade or vocational school. I also found that this could be accomplished for about $300.00 per year, which would include tuition, uniforms, materials and the cost of transportation.

These three students are now in school. Once word got out in the community, the enrollment increased to two hundred children. The teachers will have two sessions per day. One session will be in the morning and one in the afternoon. There can be no night classes because the community has no electricity.

One of the new students is a handicapped little boy in a wheel chair. The other schools would not accept him because of his handicap. This school has taken him on as a student. He arrives to school in his wheel chair with his grandmother pushing him up the rocky mountain roads.

I don’t know how many children will graduate the sixth grade this year, but if you would like to help sponsor a child or help buy supplies for this little school, please designate on your check.
Thank you,
